The week in 60 seconds: records, rate holds, and OPM goes paperless

A weak jobs report and record markets

The June jobs report landed Thursday. The economy added 57,000 jobs against expectations of 115,000, and prior months were revised down by another 74,000.

The strange part: the Dow closed at an all-time high of 52,900 that same afternoon. The S&P 500 gained 1.8% for the week and the Nasdaq added 2.1%.

That disconnect suggests the market was betting a soft jobs number gives the Fed more room to cut later. The Fed held rates at 3.50 to 3.75% in June.

A win for federal retirees

OPM ended paper retirement processing after 65 years. Nearly all applications now go through the digital portal, cutting average processing time from 105 days to 66 days. The backlog fell 23% to a record low of 38,547.

If you are planning to retire in the next 12 months, file digitally. OPM has said complete digital packages can produce a first pension payment within 7 days.

Meanwhile TSP’s S fund led all funds in June with a 4.34% gain.

New borrowing power for small business

Starting July 4, the SBA doubled its maximum combined loan limit from $5 million to $10 million. If your business is in a capital-intensive industry like manufacturing or construction and you have been bumping against the old ceiling, this opens real growth capacity.
