Should I take a VERA or VSIP offer?
An early-out or incentive can feel like a deadline, not a decision. The right question is whether the offer fits your income, benefits, and retirement timing.

01 · Plain-English answer
Start with the gap, not the offer.
A VERA or VSIP offer may help some employees leave earlier than planned, but it can also expose gaps in pension timing, health coverage, TSP income, and cash reserves.
The incentive amount is only one piece. A useful review asks what changes if you retire now, wait, or use the offer as a bridge to another income source.
We help you compare the moving parts so the decision is not driven only by the deadline.
02 · What can change the answer
The trade-offs are personal.
- Your age, years of service, and retirement category.
- Whether the offer affects health or life insurance continuation.
- Your expected pension, FERS supplement, or Social Security timing.
- Your cash reserve and near-term income needs.
- Any tax, debt, or spouse-income considerations.
03 · Before you decide
Run the numbers before the deadline.
Before accepting, review your annuity estimate, benefit continuation rules, TSP plan, tax impact, and whether the offer changes your retirement timeline.
